Cloud computing services are increasingly being made available to users everywhere. We use cloud services often without the knowledge that we are doing so. We access web pages that are stored on servers maintained by public cloud service providers. We often store files and share such files with colleagues, friends, and family, using storage services provided on such cloud-based servers, e.g., Google drive or Dropbox. What is Cloud Computing and what are the security issues related to Cloud Computing? These are topics our students are increasingly facing when they work in industry today. We need to educate the next generation of students on these topics. This workshop is intended to help faculty do just that.

About the Workshop:  Computer and network security is currently being taught in undergraduate and graduate classes, in a wide spectrum of offerings. Some institutions offer security as a separate course, while others treat it within other courses (e.g., distributed systems, networking). This workshop aims to target a wide array of faculty from varied institutions to help them create curricular materials in cloud security and to integrate these materials into their current course offerings.

A team of faculty funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for a five-year NSF Frontier project titled: “Rethinking Security in the Era of Cloud Computing” from UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and Cornell Tech, invite you to apply to attend this workshop. We are organizing this workshop to enable the participants to develop and share course modules in cloud security to serve the faculty and students in your institution and other institutions.

This workshop is intended to encourage the introduction of cloud security and related concepts in undergraduate networking, operating systems, distributed systems, and security classes.  Preference will therefore be given to participants who have never taught these concepts in their classroom and intend to do so within the next year.

The workshop will include an overview of security, cloud computing, and cloud security concepts; descriptions of available teaching resources such as ready-to-use education modules and exercises; and recommendations for integration into the classroom. This workshop has been offered once before.

This workshop will be held from Wednesday, July 13, through Friday, July 15, 2016.

Travel Grants All workshop participants will be reimbursed for travel to/from the workshop, lodging for up to three nights (Jul 12, 13, 14), and meals. If your home location necessitates a fourth night of stay, we will reimburse that; please let us know in advance. You do not need to apply for this travel grant separately.
